Hip-hop cops unfairly target rappers

One can claim most hip-hop artists have a problem with authority, often expressing distaste towards them in their music. But there’s a reason for this – rappers have been targeted, harassed and discriminated upon. It’s really the police who have a problem with hip-hop artists.

According to a YouTube video, retired New York Police Department officer, Derick Parker, said in a 2006 documentary Black and Blue: Legends of the Hip-Hop Cop that he began a task force called the hip-hop squad to investigate rappers for criminal activity. Student centre packed for Humber’s Got Talent

The Humber’s Got Talent show had students crowd the student-centre as they eagerly watched and cheered the finalists.

The $1,000 first prize winner of the show was the Gavin Dance Crew who rocked the crowd with Indian dance moves with traditional Indian attire. Students and onlookers screamed and cheered throughout their entire performance.

Gavin Anand, the leader of the Gavin Dance Crew, said the group performed an Indian fusion dance and was proud of receiving the first prize.

Pub permit a temporary move, says director of campus services

Facing delays in getting its full liquor licence, LinX has used special occasion permits to host pub events at Humber’s North campus, said Terry Kyritsis, director of campus services.

“We have been trying to offer some special events for the benefit of our students… until we have the regular liquor licence,” said Kyritsis.

Humber Et Cetera found out a sale permit, which is a type of special occasion permit, was approved by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO) to host a ‘reception event’.

Despite being ranked No. 1 in the country, Humber’s women’s soccer team took home the bronze medal from the provincial championship on Oct. 16-17, leaving them in sixth place nationally.

The heavily favoured Hawks, who hosted the event in Vaughan, lost the opportunity for the gold and silver medals after the Durham College Lords shut them out 4-0 in semi-final action, Friday.

Durham head coach David Staley was proud of his team’s performance, and said it was the toughest game of the season so far.

Don’t be surprised if the next time you turn on your TV you see a useless two-minute spot called Local TV Matters.

Major Canadian networks are trying for the third time to coerce the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission into saddling local cable and satellite providers with an additional fee to carry previously free local programming. The carriage fee has been branded as a way to support local TV, which is supposedly struggling to stay afloat during this time of economic uncertainty.

Concerned Filipino students at Humber are using social networks like Facebook and cell phones to keep in touch with their family and friends in the Philippines after Typhoon Ketsana devastated Manila, the country’s capital.

Ivan Mejia, a second-year fitness and health promotion student, said he is “very saddened,” about the disaster.

Contract talks to resume

The Humber faculty union is working without a contract after their collective bargaining agreement expired on Aug. 31. Contract negotiations with management will resume on Oct. 20.

Orville Getz, president officer of the faculty union, said a government appointed conciliator decided the faculty union and management stances were irreconcilable in August and put negotiations on hold.

A major issue identified by the union is the faculty's workload, but management has not sufficiently addressed this issue, Getz said.

Students are waiting to hear if they will have to drop extra coin into the TTC fare box.

“There’s been no decision made as of yet,” said Kevin Beaulieu, executive assistant to TTC commisioner Adam Giambrone.

Beaulieu said it is too early to tell if there will be a hike. The decision will be made after budget talks with the City of Toronto.
