People who just can’t seem to get their home or apartment looking like they want can seek help at today’s Design Dilemma Day created by Fourth-year interior design students.
“If design and decorating isn’t your forte, it’s your lucky day,” said Bailey Johnston, 21, a fourth-year interior design student on the Design Dilemma Day committee.
“Some people just don’t know where to begin when it comes to designing their homes, and that’s where we step in,” said Johnston.
“Whether it’s re-arranging furniture, picking tile for bathrooms, or choosing paint samples and lighting fixtures, we are welcoming Humber’s faculty, staff and students to join us.”
Johnston said for $15, people can come with their floor plans, ideas and questions and be provided with a 20-minute consultation.
Kelly Gluck, the program co-ordinator for interior design, said Design Dilemma students created the fundraiser to pay for a successful design thesis show as well as help advise those with home based problems.
“It’s going to be challenging for the design students so it’s extremely important that the college responds in an enthusiastic way to ensure our team feels support when coming up with new ideas. We’re really looking forward to seeing a huge turnout,” said Gluck.
Elaine Bottomley, a senior interior designer for Comley van Brussel Design and Management, and former graduate of the Humber interior design program, said an event like this is a great networking opportunity.
“It’s important to know how sophisticated fourth-year interior design students are, as well as know their design abilities,” said Bottomley. “A lot of people haven’t had the opportunity to engage with a designer before, so it’s a win-win situation for everybody.”
“It allows the design students to interact with different people, therefore honing their communication skills,” said Bottomley. “Secondly, students will be on a fixed budget and it’s up to the designer to provide solutions that meet and exceed the clients expectations, therefore helping with their problem solving skills.”
Design Dilemma Day takes place today from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. in the Humber Community Room, NX 101.
