Joe Zee, the creative director of Elle Magazine, is often quoted as saying, “twice is a coincidence. Three times is a trend.” However, Mr. Zee was talking about fashion’s next big obsession not one of history’s darkest moments.

Blackface has been popping up everywhere lately. Fashion magazines such as Paris Vogue, W Magazine and D Mode Magazine have featured white and Asian models in blackface.

Mohawk ends Humber’s two-month long winning streak

The Hawks men’s volleyball team was handed their first loss of the season to the Mohawk Mountaineers on Nov. 18.

Humber was coming off a big victory at the Humber Cup going into the game but looked lost from the start.

Although the score was close, Mohawk dominated the first set against a tired Hawks line-up.

Men’s basketball squeeze out a win against the Mountaineers

The Hawks men’s basketball team held off the Mohawk Mountaineers for a 71-70 victory at Humber on Nov. 19.

The Hawks built a big lead, let almost all of it slip away, expanded the lead again, allowed Mohawk to rally late and then won it with a defensive stop in the final seconds.

“It’s important for the team to stay focused, no matter who we’re playing,” said the Hawks Jeremy Alleyne, “and we will have success.”

Hawks improve their intensity against Mohawk Mountaineers

A bounce-back effort led the Humber women’s basketball team past the Mohawk Mountaineers 66-58 on Nov. 19.

The Hawks started the game strong in the first half but got into foul trouble in the second, which allowed the Mountaineers to stay in the game.

Despite slow starts all season long the Hawks managed to hold the Mountaineers to 37-26 after the first half.

Fusion Festival brings cultures together

Although few people attended, students say they enjoyed the performances and free food at the International Fusion Festival in the Student Centre on Oct. 21.

Nadia Rosemond, international student advisor, said the event was a talent show for international students to display their singing and dancing skills.

“It was a small turnout, but we did have students perform and sing,” said Rosemond.

There were seven performers, including two singers and one dancer who were on stage and others from the audience decided to perform as well.

Despite a slow start the Humber men’s volleyball team triumph over the Fanshawe Falcons

The Humber men’s volleyball team took on the Fanshawe Falcons at home, winning in four sets on Nov. 25.

Although the Hawks only lost the first set 25-23, the game appeared to be going in Fanshawe’s favour early in the game.

Humber got back into the game quickly by taking the next three sets to win the game.

Stevie Starr spits out fun in the student center

Stevie Starr, the human regurgitater, amazed students as he swallowed several objects, including live goldfish at the student centre Nov. 3.

“He’s the only guy in the entire world that can do what he does,” said the spokesman who introduced Starr, who has performed all over the world. “I warn you, do not go home and tell your friends what you’ve seen, because they’ll say there’s no way man, you’re smashed outta your f****** pants!”

Students who attended the performance enjoyed Starr’s gargling, but some were disgusted by his actions.

Student centre packed for Humber’s Got Talent

The Humber’s Got Talent show had students crowd the student-centre as they eagerly watched and cheered the finalists.

The $1,000 first prize winner of the show was the Gavin Dance Crew who rocked the crowd with Indian dance moves with traditional Indian attire. Students and onlookers screamed and cheered throughout their entire performance.

Gavin Anand, the leader of the Gavin Dance Crew, said the group performed an Indian fusion dance and was proud of receiving the first prize.

Author finishes book with a little help from her friends

Author Barbara Wall LaRocque was finally able to finish her father’s life’s work, with help from the Humber school of writers.

“I needed guidance and Humber helped me,” said LaRoque.

The retired registered nurse and part-time classical singer recently had her book, Wolfe Island: a Legacy in Stone, released in August of this year.

Humber VJ hopefuls still vying for coveted position

As MuchMusic continues their search for their newest video jockey, former recreation and leisure student Marlon Palmer placed in the top four on Nov. 23 along with his best friend and future Humber student Laith Hakeem.

Both Hakeem and Palmer were selected among thousands of VJ hopefuls on Oct. 13 and now are one step closer to making their childhood dreams come true.

With just under 5000 fans on Facebook, Palmer said he is happy to have made the final four.
