From blowing up random objects in a microwave with Tokyo Police Club to having a sleepover with singer Andrew W.K – it’s all in a day’s work for two Humber graduates.
Amidst the cheeky banter and unconventional performances lies the talent of Justin Taylor and Ashley Carter as they help create AUX TV’s Talk Show Night at Juicebox Manor.
Juicebox Manor’s television launch debuted on Canada’s newest music channel, AUX TV, which premiered on Oct. 1 to over one million homes, introducing viewers to shows focused entirely on music and music culture.
However, this is no ordinary talk show. Rather than bringing in guests to sit on studio couches, the show is filmed right in the comfort of producer Carter’s own home.
“It’s a strange dream come true because all the bands we love sit in our kitchen and talk with us and then go into our basement and play songs that we love,” said Carter.
Since graduating from Humber’s journalism program two years ago, Carter has been working as a freelance writer for national music magazine Exlaim! Until recently she devoted the majority of her time behind camera producing Juicebox.
Taylor and Carter first met in high school and both attended Humber. Taylor graduated last year from the film and television program.
“I came out of the program looking into film and had interest in TV. This opportunity came up, and being able to combine TV with my passion of music has been a fantastic opportunity to blur that line between the two worlds,” said Taylor.
While AUX approached the team with the opportunity to televise the show, Taylor gives credit to Humber and its hands on approach of teaching for his confidence in working on such a project.
“Had I not graduated from Humber, there is no way I could have taken this,” he said.
Sam Sutherland, host of Juicebox, also created the show with Carter and Taylor.
“It’s a huge pleasure working with them because they are not only two of my best friends, they are also extremely talented and excellent at working under the strange pressures and weird situations at Juicebox,” said Sutherland.
Talk Show Night at Juicebox Manor airs every Tuesday at 11 p.m. on Rogers’ Cable channel 107.
