From money to communication, four of six students running for Humber Students’ Federation president have very different ideas about what will work best for students on all three campuses.

Mike Berg, 21, said his previous experience as GHSA president gives him the know-how to improve academics at Humber.

“For me, because I have a background of academics, I have a real passion for advocacy in terms of academics,” said Berg, a media studies public relations student at Guelph-Humber.

Berg plans to act on this by “increasing communication bet-ween staff and students.”

Part of the president’s job is to set the budget and allocate funds for that year.

Kirstin Liddell’s love of working at the HSF office led to her decision to run. While the third-year public relations student, 20, has many plans for Humber, financial aid is central to her campaign. She said “making more bursaries available to students” is her priority.

Rosemarie Ditaranto-Ivascu, 20, a first-year journalism student, said teamwork will create a safe and enthusiastic learning environment.

“If I were president you would be put first. There would be no more me or I, we would become the ultimate team.”

When asked about the conflict of interest between journalism and politics, the candidate is vocal about continuing her studies, despite the fact that as an HSF executive she would be unable to report for any school media.

Journalism program co-ordinator Carey French says, “You cannot do the two things, it’s clearly a conflict.”
Making Humber a better school is what inspired Warren Lindsay, 21, to run for HSF president, he said.

“I have been a student for a few years now and I get how things are run, and I want to make my difference on campus,” said the second-year business marketing student.

The other two students running for HSF president, Samuel Anyanwu and Trudy Ann Powell, did not respond to interview requests by press time.
